This two day workshop will teach students the basic techniques used to make fabric-covered hand-sewn boxes. We will be making a basic square or rectangular box with a choice of lid styles and the option to also pad the box on some or all the surfaces. Students may also wish to bead some of these padded surfaces.

HEALTH AND SAFETY: due to the use of very sharp scalpels, this will be a priority and any student not having the correct equipment will, unfortunately, not be able to continue.

I will provide mount board and curved needles for students at cost.

Student requirements:
Cutting mat – minimum A3 size
Swann Morton scalpel with 10a blades (include spares in case of breakages) A small pair of pliers ensures safe attachment of blades.
Metal safety ruler with metric measurements.
Set square
Sharp pencil H or HB
Cotton fabric of your choice. I suggest patchwork style fabrics with a small pattern. You will need approximately 2 fat quarters - 1 for the outer, the other for the lining.
Thin wadding or felt for padding if wished.
Matching cotton thread.
Small length of ribbon if a tab is required on the lid, longer if stays are added as well.
Fabric scissors.
“Glass-headed” pins
Tacky PVA glue and spreader

Optional extras: small seed beads, suitable size needle, matching thread and a pricker.
Wet wipes are useful when using glue.
